The Kawasaki Ridge Windshield: What Makes It Different
The Kawasaki Ridge windshield is large, faces forward into direct sun, and has a noticeable curve that makes it slightly more challenging to tint than a flat window. This guide walks through the install process step by step — including how to handle the curved glass and what tools you actually need.
Tools Required
You'll need: the pre-cut Kawasaki Ridge windshield tint kit, a heat gun, a squeegee or hard card, a spray bottle with diluted soapy water, a microfiber cloth, and optionally a gasket tool for tucking edges. Don't substitute a hair dryer for the heat gun — it doesn't get hot enough to properly shrink the film on a curved windshield.
Step 1: Clean the Windshield
Clean the entire windshield surface with soap and water, then wipe down with isopropyl alcohol. Pay attention to the edges where the glass meets the seal — debris accumulates there and will cause edge lifting if not removed. Let the glass dry completely before starting the install.
Step 2: Wet the Glass and Apply the Film
Spray the windshield generously with soapy water. Peel the liner from your pre-cut film piece while spraying the adhesive side to prevent it sticking to itself. Lay the film onto the wet windshield and slide it into position — it should move freely on the wet surface. Center it with a few millimeters of overlap on all edges.
Step 3: Squeegee Out Water from the Center
Starting at the center of the windshield, use your squeegee to push water toward the edges in overlapping strokes. Remove as much water as possible before applying heat. Don't press so hard you create creases in the film.
Step 4: Heat and Shrink the Edges
The Ridge windshield has a curve, especially at the top corners. Hold the heat gun 6-8 inches from the glass and move it in slow passes over any areas where the film is wrinkling or lifting. As the film heats, it will shrink and conform to the glass. Follow the heat with your squeegee to press the film flat. Work in small sections — heat a small area, squeegee it flat, move to the next section.
Step 5: Trim Excess and Tuck Edges
Once the film is flat and adhered to the glass, trim any excess at the perimeter with a sharp blade. Tuck the edge under the windshield seal using a gasket tool for the cleanest possible finish. A tucked edge is less likely to lift over time and looks more professional than a cut edge.
Cure Time and Final Notes
Allow 24-48 hours cure time before washing the windshield. Small water bubbles or haze immediately after install are normal and will clear as the film cures. Install difficulty for the Ridge windshield is 5/10. It's a manageable DIY job — the heat gun is what makes it work.
