Wisconsin's New UTV Window Tint Law (Effective June 1, 2026): What's Legal & What's Not

Wisconsin's New UTV Window Tint Law (Effective June 1, 2026): What's Legal & What's Not

Quick answer: Starting June 1, 2026, Wisconsin has new window tint limits for UTVs. Here's the short version:

Window Max Tint Darkness
Front windshield Tint only the top 5 inches, and no darker than 50%
Front side windows 50%
Rear side windows 35%
Rear glass 35%
Reflective/mirrored film Banned everywhere on the machine

If your tint is darker than the numbers above, your UTV won't be legal on Wisconsin trails and routes after June 1.

Why the Law Changed

The Wisconsin DNR rolled out new UTV rules to cut down on crashes after a deadly stretch on the trails. Tint restrictions are part of a larger safety package that also added seat belt and towing rules. Bottom line: the state wants drivers to be able to see and be seen.

The Rules, Broken Down

Front windshield — You can only tint the top 5 inches from the top edge of the windshield, and that strip can't be darker than 50%. Think of it as a sun visor strip, not a full tint.

Front side windows — Keep these at 50% or lighter.

Rear side windows and rear glass — These can go a little darker at 35%.

No reflective or mirrored film — Anywhere. Front, sides, rear. If it reflects, it's not allowed.

What "50%" and "35%" Actually Mean

The percentage is how much light passes through the film (VLT — visible light transmission). Higher number = lighter tint. Lower number = darker. So 35% is darker than 50%. Anything below the legal number for that window is too dark.
